Last Day of School Country Party

One day at the park the kids and I started talking about what we could do to finish our school year off with a bang. We ended up planning a "country party" (meaning countries of the world, not the opposite of city), and the kids really stepped up with most of the ideas. We picked a different country from each continent to feature a food from, planned a few games we could play, and invited Grace, Cooper and Heather to join us (because what is a party without a few cousins?).

The day (Friday, 27 May) started out with us meeting the Olsens at the train museum in Ogden (this wasn't really related to the "country" theme, but we had been wanting to visit the museum with them for a while, so it made sense to combine the two into one trip). We enjoyed climbing in the caboose and watching the model trains go back and forth through their scenes and wandering outside among the giant trains parked there. Once we had our fill of the trains, we headed back to Eden for lunch and games.

Our country menu included:

South America - Bolivia: bunelos

North America - Mexico: nachos from Carlos and Harley's

Europe - Italy: Easter egg bread (we had wanted to make these at Easter time, but did the hot cross buns instead, so brought them back for our country party in May)

Oceania - New Zealand: kiwis

Asia - India: butter chicken and rice

Africa - Libya: couscous

Antarctica: shaved ice (I loved this suggestion from Cal, much tastier than seal blubber!)

And Heather brought watermelon (Africa) and some Argentine candy.

It was a delicious smorgasbord feast!

Then we played games. We had a "worldle"-esque quiz sheet and bigger sheets with outlines of the countries taped up on the wall that the kids raced to tap first when I called out their names. We played a Korean stick game, a Canadian water bucket race game, and a stick jumping game from Brazil (? maybe?). I also printed out summer reading charts that had the theme of reading around the world. We had a grand time!

I also wanted to be sure to snap some "last day of school" pics, so we did that later that evening.

What a way to end our school year! Hooray for homeschool and hooray for these awesome kids who made it work!
