Sledding on the Lake

On the first Saturday morning of the new year, we were feeling antsy to get outside (story of our life in the winter).  We opted for a hike on the Pineview Trail, but from a different starting point than our usual North Arm Trailhead.  This time we were at the "halfway" (maybe?) point along the west side, near the Yacht Club.  Gregg brought along our (now) old red sled (it's developed a crack this winter, but it still works for our purposes) just in case the kids' legs stopped working along the way.  Well, it was a great thing that he did so, because we ended up taking the "low road" fork that led down to the shores of the frozen reservoir.  The snow on the slope was fluffy and untracked, and the pitch was just perfect for a gentle cruise out onto the lake.  We lapped the hill a handful of times before trekking out further onto the snow-covered ice for a little exploring.  We could have stayed out in the sunshine and snow for a good long while, but it was getting to be lunchtime (plus Callie had a much anticipated birthday party and Sam had a much anticipated nap (anticipated by his parents, anyway) scheduled after that) so we headed back to the car.  As expected, the legs of our children gave out on the return trip, so the sled came in handy yet again!

If you squint you can see Gregg and the kids
loading up on the sled for the maiden voyage
down this perfect hill (they're right at the base of
those "cliffs").

Snacktime on the frozen lake.  (Yes, that is a giant oatmeal cream
pie he's holding - he is his father's son, indeed.)

Most of the ice was covered in a couple inches
of snow, but we did find patches of this cool
frost again, one of my favorite things from
our icy times last year.

And more red berries because I'm apparently
obsessed.  These, I think, were actually rose
hips.  And they were lovely.
