Every year from when a grandchild turns four and beyond, Grandpa and Grandma Blanchard take the birthday child on a birthday date of his or her choosing, including an activity and a meal (and there are always special birthday treats included, too!). This is Callie's third time and she has been talking about her plans for months. Said plans have changed a few (quite a few) times leading up to the big day, but the final decision was a fishing trip (where Grandpa would teach her how to catch a fish) and lunch at Pat's. Sam and I dropped Callie off at Grandpa and Grandma's house on our way to run errands on Friday, June 7th. And the Birthday Date had begun!
Paul likes to fish on the Weber River, but this spring has been so rainy and the snow melt has been so much that the river was much too dangerous to take an almost-six-year-old (or any-year-old) fishing on. So he did some scouting and we did some googling and they came up with a plan to try their hand at a small pond near their home in West Haven, with a backup guaranteed catch at a little fish hatchery in North Ogden. They ended up doing both, and Cal caught a huge 16 incher within minutes once they made it to the Cold Springs Fish Farm. She was thrilled and so proud! And then she got to enjoy her tots for lunch at Pat's! Best day ever! And best tradition ever!

And the master teacher. |
Not catching anything, but still smiling. |
Now for the fish farm action. |
They provide the bamboo poles with a tiny leather lure that is the same size and shape and color as the fish food you buy in a little cup. The fish start chomping and you start catching! |
Then the workers come measure and clean your fish for you. You pay by the inch. Easy peasy. Haha. |
Faves! |
Lunch of champions! |
