Beaver Lake Trail

Since it was raining on Monday evening right at the time of our regularly scheduled hike (not that you'll hear any complaints from us about the rain - in fact, we've been rejoicing that we've had showers in the afternoon/evening every day this week!) we decided to try our weekly hike on Wednesday morning since it was a holiday.  I certainly couldn't think of a better way to celebrate America's birthday than exploring the great outdoors with my love.

Today's destination (and what a glorious destination it was!) was to Beaver Lake, just outside Beaver Creek Ski Resort's boundaries in the Holy Cross Wilderness.  We parked in the free covered parking at the base of the mountain, and headed up, up, up to the very beautiful little mountain lake.  To finish off the adventure, since we didn't pack lunches because we were out of bread, we stopped for an amazing Cowboy pizza (CHICKEN, ONIONS, GREEN PEPPERS, FRESH MINCED CILANTRO, BAR-B-QUE SAUCE, SMOKED GOUDA AND MOZZARELLA) at Blue Moose Pizza in Beaver Creek village.  Holy moley - if all hikes could end like that!  I guess that's where Beaver Creek's "Not Exactly Roughing It" slogan really rings true.  ;)

Today's stats:
Date hiked: 4 July 2012
Start time: 10:15 am (and we really should have started earlier - it got hot quick! - but amazingly we weren't the last ones going up)
Rest/eat/explore time: 45 minutes
Back to car: 1:30 pm
Total round trip time: 3 hours 15 minutes
Total mileage: 6.6 miles (both the book and my gps seemed to jive today)
High point: ~9820 feet

And now, the part you've all been waiting for:

Just some weird light colored, fuzzy stuff
that had invaded a lot of the trees in the area.
Waiting for a diagnosis from my sister.

P.S. If you just didn't get enough wildflower photos in this post - check out my weekly photo blog for a few more, with a 4th of July twist.  :)

  1. I'll agree with you, that being outdoors is a great way to celebrate the 4th! Fun times and beautiful scenery, as usual. How steep of a climb was it?

    1. The book says we gained 1700 feet in 3.3 miles. There were definitely some steep parts, and they were in the full sun which made them feel even harder. I think if we had left earlier in the morning and brought more water it would have helped a lot. Both of us are feeling a little stiff and sore this morning, though.
