Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks

This year, we had two fantastic and filling Thanksgiving celebrations.  Lately, the Blanchard clan has opted for a Sunday-before-Thanksgiving feast, with the Elwoods gathering on Thursday.  This year, we were excited to have Gregg's brother, Ryan, in the state at Thanksgiving time (something that hasn't happened for quite a few years - at least longer than the six years I've been in the family), but he could only be here from Thanksgiving on through the weekend.  So, we had Thanksgiving on Thursday with the Elwoods, as originally scheduled.  And then we had Blanchard Thanksgiving on Friday.  (And then we ate full-on Thanksgiving dinner leftovers for two more days.)  It was delicious and wonderful and so fun to be all together with the ones we love most.

In a fashion completely opposite of what I usually do (at least on a day-to-day basis, but, curiously enough totally true-to-form when I get together with family), I did not take a single picture from Thursday on.  (I know.  I mean, did you see that October Round-Up post?  I typically take way. too. many. photos.)  But, I was able to snag a couple that my mom and sister posted.  And then a bunch that Gregg's mom, Kim, posted.  So, there is some photographic evidence of our holiday to share here.

Thursday
We woke up early (Sam's fault) and headed to Logan where we helped my mom make rolls and watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Then, migrated a bit further north to my Elwood Grandparents' house.  There we finished food preparations and wandered to the park for a little game of "TOM" (think PIG, but Thanksgiving-ified).  Back to Grandma's for our feast and football-watching and game-playing and people-visiting.  Then came pie.  And then came new jammies for the kidlets.  And then we drove home.  Good day.

So this was really from Tuesday, aka Pretzel
Turkey Day.  Heather and Grace came
down to play and we made (attempted anyway)
these little treats to share with all the families
as place settings for Thanksgiving dinners.

And this was really from Wednesday, aka
Cheesecake Day.  Sam was my helper for the
second one of the day, and he got to taste his first
beater.

It was a hit!

(alternate title "a rather uneventful minute and a half, but one
that a momma can't help but love")
(update 1/11/2021 - I am going through making updates to links that may be missing
and I can't find this one anymore and I have no idea what it is about! I'm so sad!)

The TOM gang, in all their basketball glory.

A little after-dinner serenade from these
hooligans.

Heather made pie - and lots of it.  This sheet cake apple pie,
a peach pie, a pumpkin pie and a pecan pie shortbread crust bar
thing.  I added a reese's chocolate pb cheesecake to the mix.
Basically we were all rolling home in a sugar coma.

Jammies and babies.  Best combo ever.

Saying our goodbyes to the family.
Friday
Up early again (thanks a lot, Sam!).  This time we packed up our goodies and headed South to Gregg's parents' house.  We spent the morning munching cheeseball and other cheesy dips and catching up with out of state siblings (Laurel and Bret and kids came in from Colorado to join the fun, too!).  Then we feasted again.  Afternoon happenings included naps, walks, and dress-ups.  Back to the kitchen table for pie, followed by a family stroll on the golf course with Aggie the dog.  And then it was time to go home yet again.

Enthusiastic greeting for Uncle Ryan.  He gives this to everyone,
so don't think Ryan had special treatment.

Visiting.

A bunch of cheeseballs by the cheeseball.

Super hero paparazzi Cohen snaps one of Uncle Gregg.

Perusing the family scrapbooks.  Plus bunny ears.  Why not?

This one cracks me up - all that food and Sam
in the corner by himself.

Let's eat!

She's discovered the thrill of Grandma's dress-up
box.

All the family together.

Stories before we hit the road.

Fill 'im up!
Saturday
Up early again (are you noticing a trend?) and on the road back to SoJo for another day of family fun.  (Gotta pack it in while everyone is in the same state!)  On the docket for today was a yummy lunch at Bruges Waffles and Frites (we needed the recently returned-from-Brussels Ryan to decipher the authentic eats on the menu, etc.) and a tour of Scott's school (Corner Canyon High in Draper).  Gregg and Ryan headed for the mountains to check out the resorts' opening day (they didn't ski but they did ride the tram at Snowbird) while the rest of us headed back to home-base for naps and/or a little R&R.  Then Grandma brought out the gingerbread house and the cousins had a blast decorating it up to perfection.  Dinner was a serve-yourself leftovers buffet before heading over to Heather and Scott's place for an early combined birthday celebration for Heather and Ryan (since we were all together, why not, right?)  We chowed on cheesecake and visited and enjoyed their Christmas tree.  And then it was back into jammies and back into the car and back home to bed once again.  A fun-and-food-filled weekend had come to an end.

Fries and waffles.  What else do you eat the day after a full
Thanksgiving spread?

A pretty fine herd.

Taking turns to pick where the candies will go.

And we're done!

Ta-da!

Some pics from Gregg of his mountain/brother time.

We are certainly thankful for Thanksgiving!

Gobble Gobble Gobble

November means it's Thankful Turkey time again.  We started this tradition last year and have absolutely loved it again this year.  It's a great time of day when we gather around the coffee table with a bag of broken crayons, a construction paper feather, and a roll of masking tape and ask each other what we're thankful for that day.  Sometimes they're silly things, sometimes they're more serious things, but every time they are genuine feelings of gratitude as we take time to remember how blessed we are.

Photos from Phones - October 2016 Round Up

October!  What a full month of fall family fun. (A lot of which I have already posted about, yet still have this many more photos to share here - it's a real problem I have, taking so. many. pictures.  But it's not going away anytime soon, I reckon.)

10.1.16
(our general conference breakfast: ginger pear sweetrolls.
oh. my. heavens!)

10.1.16
(the sky at the park was a-ok tonight!)

10.1.16

10.1.16

10.1.16

10.1.16

10.1.16

10.1.16
(kinda spooky/ufo-ish. or something)

10.3.16
(my october "reading list" - I only completed three from this pile,
started a couple others, and had to return two more to the library
before I got around to them. Basically this is the equivalent of my
eyes were bigger than my stomach in reading form)

10.4.16
(Cal is getting into "decorating" for holidays
so we made a jack-o-lantern out of construction
paper to hang on her door.  The green "cheeks"
were all her idea and I thought they were too cute
for words)

10.4.16
("Mom, look at this leaf!  It's yellow and it's bigger
than my face.")

10.4.16
(a spectacular cloud night on our walk around the triangle)

10.4.16

10.4.16
(I love where I live)

10.5.16
(Black Bottomed Pumpkin Muffins.  (Sounds fancy but it just
means I burned them.)  I added a variety of mix-ins since I
couldn't decide: cranberries, apples, and mini chocolate chips
and pecans.)

10.6.16
(takin' the "shortcut" home from the store)

10.6.16
(someone likes to see himself on the selfie cam)

10.6.16
(and someone's mom likes to see his little grin
when he does so)

10.8.16
(Gregg is tired of me picking at my thumbs so he
took drastic action)

10.8.16
(my/our favorite fall-flavored library books - seriously great
art and stories throughout)

10.8.16
(we got a canoe from Gregg's parents so we
tried it out before it got too cold)

10.8.16
(he's ready!)

10.8.16
(and so is she!)

10.8.16
(we explored the shallows along the old highway
going through the north arm of pineview)

10.8.16
(it's a little interesting to canoe with a one-year-
old on your lap, but Sam actually did really great
at holding still)

10.8.16
(but poor Gregg had to do all the heavy arm work
of paddling by himself. good thing he's so tough)

10.8.16
(I probably should have included this one on my leaves post but
it's here instead.  Isn't it lovely?  It's on the road up to the
environmental center where we like to play disc golf)

10.8.16
(a lovely, cool, late fall evening playing with
frisbees in the mountains. can't beat it!)

10.8.16
(he's figuring it out)

10.8.16

10.9.16
(napping in my arms. with a very dirty face.)

10.9.16
(After we finished the last chapter tonight before
bed, Cal said, "Mom, can we read more Laura
and Mary?" You betcha, sweetheart.  That is the
right question.)

10.10.16
(a monday night hike up near powmow to see
the giant paper airplane statue)

10.10.16
(and also a sassy sunset)

10.10.16
(all the leaves had dropped from the aspens)

10.10.16

10.10.16

10.10.16
(we made it!)

10.10.16

10.10.16

10.10.16

10.10.16

10.10.16
(I kept looking behind me to catch more glimpses
of the sunset as we headed back to the car)

10.10.16

10.10.16
(maybe I should have put all these hike pics in their own post?)

10.11.16

10.11.16

10.11.16

10.11.16
(his giggles are my favorite)

10.12.16
(one of those naptimes)

10.13.16
(I find various animals or babies - and now tools
and vessels apparently - tucked in all over the
house on the regular)

10.14.16
(awesome skies in the mornin')

10.14.16
(not just sunset pics here - we do see the sunrise, as well!)

10.14.16
(when quiet time gets reaaaally quiet - not a
super rare occurrence as we adjust to "no nap"
days with this one)

bonus videos!

and

10.14.16?
(I actually have no idea when these were
taken but they were uploaded on the 14th
to my google drive so we'll go with that
even though it's likely they were taken in
September even)

10.17.16
(loved this quick read - a cute little novel in
poetry.  different writing style than anything I've
ever read before, and I really enjoyed it)

10.17.16
(pretty day for a walk to the store)

10.17.16
(to get these! but, to be honest, I was underwhelmed)

10.17.16
(sunsets are getting earlier.
this is the view to the east)

10.17.16
(this is looking west)

10.17.16
(moody)

10.17.16
(Cal had been dying to make caramel apples
after reading about them in all the Halloween
and fall story books from the library.)

10.17.16
(we finally did it for our FHE treats this night)

10.17.16
(they didn't turn out quite as pretty as rocky
mountain chocolate factory, but for first timers
making caramel and decorating apples, I think
they turned out alright.)

10.17.16
(and Cal did, too!)

10.18.16
(trying to get a cute posing by the pumpkins picture
was not going quite to pinterest plan this morning)

10.18.16

10.18.16

10.18.16
(the park was a bit too chilly for these chilluns
so we opted to keep on strollin'.  don't let Sam's
face fool you, he was loving it.)

10.18.16
(we walked down to the lake)

10.18.16
(it was a glorious fall morning)

10.18.16
(and we could walk out on the old highway almost all the way
across. if I hadn't been by myself, we could have just crossed
over a little log bridge and made it to the other side. but it was
getting to be lunchtime and I didn't want to carry two kids and
a stroller across said bridge alone, so we didn't do it)

10.18.16
(crazy to think that where I'm standing and all you see here is
under water during the summer months)

10.18.16

10.18.16
(looking east-ish)

10.18.16
(looking west-ish)

10.18.16
(looking south-ish)

10.18.16
(I wasn't deterred after my earlier attempts)

10.18.16

10.18.16
(I was also not any more successful in getting
that "perfect shot".  Funny enough, I love these
imperfectly perfect ones better than what I had
in my head)

10.18.16
(my lunch helper, rockin' the pb&j)

10.18.16

10.18.16

10.19.16
(this is the face of a boy who just woke up after
napping for most of his nap in mom's arms . . .
again)

10.19.16
(not sure what he was laying on? my hoodie zipper?
but, ouch!)

10.20.16
(we were out walking around our yard one day
when Cal, out of the blue, points to this tree
and asks, "Mom, is that a coniferous?" She really
is paying attention to those books we've been
reading this fall!)

10.20.16
(this book, in particular)
10.20.16
(watching the tractors down the street)
10.22.16
(another good one that we enjoyed in our
quest to read all the Caldecott winners)

10.22.16
(another day, another truly quiet quiet time)

10.24.16
(this one has not been a good sleeper for most
of his life - he started off so well and then we
ruined him I guess. but lately it's been early
wakings that have gotten the best of me.
this was taken at 6:48 am after holding his
squirmy bod in the rocking chair for over an hour.
I finally gave in and turned on the light)

10.25.16
(their eyes tho)

10.25.16
(a common sight: a small boy, exploring the paths
of our back yard with his trusty solar-powered
jack-o-lantern decoration he steals from its spot
every chance he gets)

10.25.16
(trail ridin')

10.25.16
(also, she loves that shirt and would wear it every
day if I'd let her)

10.25.16

10.25.16
(a perfect, warm, glorious fall afternoon in our space)

10.25.16
(a quickie tuesday night hike in middle fork)

10.25.16
(talk about golden hour light)

10.25.16

10.25.16

10.25.16
(someone thinks he's big stuff nowadays)

10.26.16
(music makers trick-or-treating)

10.26.16

10.26.16
(a cute herd of hooligans: Moriah, Sarah, Janey, Arta, Nathan,
? (visitor), Gideon, Ellie (behind), Annika, Quincy, Miles, Lily,
Emily (the only brave mom to dress up), Henry, Jemma, Jasper,
Jared, Gavin, Asher, Addy, Eli, Emmaline, Theodore, Callie,
Bennett)

10.26.16
(our cute and crazy activity days girls had way too much fun
playing with dough blobs while their breadsticks rose and baked.
Maiya, Farrah, London (I think is her name - she's a visitor),
Mary and Julia)

10.28.16
(I've got two helpers when I cook and bake
these days.  It's a party and I love it!)

10.28.16

10.28.16

10.28.16
(cranberry pumpkin muffins for my mom's birthday)

10.28.16

10.30.16
(spectacular sunsets on our Sunday evening stroll . . . again)

10.30.16
(this was the first time Cal rode her bike
all the way around the loop)

10.30.16

10.30.16
(that sky tho)

10.30.16

10.30.16

10.30.16

10.30.16

10.30.16

10.30.16

10.30.16
(it looks like I should have made a separate
post of just sunset pictures)

10.31.16
(we got to play at my friend Christine's house
for a few hours after dropping Gregg off at the
airport early Monday morning - Zachy
gave Cal multiple rides around the kitchen/entry
on his awesome plasma car. She much preferred
riding behind him than trying to steer it herself)
