Happy Campers

We've been itching for a while now to get out on a little camping adventure.  Last summer wasn't much of a camping summer with a brand new Callie in our family.  But this year, we were ready!  Finally the stars aligned and we set out on our first family campout.  Our destination was Crested Butte, a place we've been wanting to visit since we moved to Colorado and made even more enticing (at least to Kim) after we learned that it boasts itself as the "wildflower capital of Colorado".  The flowers were, indeed, lovely, though perhaps we were a bit on the early side for the full show.  Nevertheless, we enjoyed our time in the mountains immensely - the peaks and the rivers and the trees and the clouds were too fabulous for words.  (Good thing we took pictures!)  We kept our agenda very low-key for this trip: lots of time spent sitting/reading/crawling in the sunshine, much gazing at the cloud shadows moving across the mountains, a little hike to the end of the road and back, and an afternoon outing to Mt. Crested Butte to take a gander at the ski resort.  A most perfect way to spend a weekend!

We found a most excellent camping spot along Slate River Road.

Check out our sweet new tent!  We were very pleased
 with this bad boy.

A good little post-picnic-lunch crawling on the blanket.

Fun in the sun.

More crawling.

She got brave and began venturing off the blanket.

Happy (and dirty) campers.

Yep, super happy.
(Also, I love how she's posing in this pic - it's a common little
occurrence these days and it makes me grin every time.)

Good morning, Mountain!

Good morning, cuties!

Morning light creeping down the mountains.

Breakfast time!

Cal seems to have developed her mom's love
of muffins.  These ones were especially tasty.
Recipe can be found here.

Crawling . . .

crawling . . .

I named this peak Volcano Peak because it reminded me of
those sand volcanoes we used to make in the backyard sandbox,
complete with a little baking soda and vinegar "lava" action.

The Slate River, right at the edge of our campsite.

Sigh.  Heaven.

Larkspur

???
(But it's quite pretty.)

Again, I'm not sure what this is, but it's cheery and yellow.

So, apparently I need to get better at my plant ID-ing because
I have no idea what this one is either.

This was the end of the road and the end of our hike.

View from up on top.

The best clouds.

Dozens of these streams created by the melting
snow up high cut their way down the mountains and
drained into the Slate River below.

Snow-covered Slate at ~9550' elevation.

Pit stop on the drive back home - on top of Monarch Pass
at the Continental Divide.

It was pretty chilly at 11,312 feet even in the middle of the day.

We didn't ride it.

But we got a kick out of the colorful cars.

She's One!

Yep, she's one.  And these little photo shoots are getting harder than ever to finagle by myself.  Cal has never been a still, quiet sort of girl, but these days - ever since the crawling break through happened - she is go! Go! GO! all the time!  And I wouldn't have her any other way.  (Even if it means the photo shoot is trickier to manage.)  Here she is, in all her one-year-old glory:

And what are her latest tricks, you ask?  Well, I'm glad you asked.  As I said earlier, she's a crawling maniac and has the cutest little waddle-crawl (where her legs are set a little bit wide and her bum wiggles back and forth) you ever did see.  She also does this crazy-cute slow-mo crawl where she lifts her hands up slowly and sets them down in a very exaggerated motion for a few steps and then . . . . zoom! she takes off.  She's started to pull herself up to standing against the couch (and us, if we're laying on the floor) but hasn't quite figured out the sitting back down part and it makes her rather mad.

Cal has discovered the joy of the tupperware cupboard (a great place to play while mom is making dinner) and has recently learned that she can open the door herself.  Thank heavens she hasn't figured out that all the other cupboards in the kitchen open the same way (but we have latches to install for when that day comes!).

She absolutely loves to read - by herself with her board books and with anyone who will sit down with her to read either of her two current favorites: Go Dog, Go! (you know she wants this one by the G sound she makes in the back of her throat - that means "dog") or Dr. Seuss's ABC.  She's a great pointer, pointing at all the pictures on the page in a specific order (which isn't necessarily the order that they are read), especially the ones where the dogs have the conversations about the hats.  If we're reading these books, it's the only time she'll sit (somewhat) still.

Speaking of pointing, she's learning to communicate her wants via this gesture.  Lately she doesn't always want what we've got prepared for her dinner.  Instead she points at our plates and signs "more".  "I'll have what she's having, please."  And then she gobbles it right up.  Today she snarfed a whole tray-full of leftover stroganoff for lunch because that's what mom was having.  I don't know how such a tiny person can have such a big appetite (in addition to the stroganoff, today she ate a fried egg, a half (plus) of a peach, a container of baby prunes, a whole banana, some applesauce and cottage cheese, plus a smattering of cheerios, strawberries sweet potato fries, peas, corn, and a few bites of grilled chicken)!

Oh!  And huge news!  She's sleeping through the night these days.  Yeah.  For two long months she was sleeping in our arms all night long because she wouldn't go in her crib at night (naps were fine, but don't put her down at night! - so weird to me).  Then one day and 12 minutes of intermittent crying-it-out later, she's sleeping all night with only an occasional wake up with a poopy diaper (where did that come from?).  No more night feeds, almost no more comforting back to sleep in the middle of the night, and a whole lot of free time for the parents in the evenings.  It's epic.  And wonderful.

What a year it has been!  To think of how much she has changed (physically, mentally, and emotionally) in such a short time is truly amazing.  Holy cow, she's our favorite little human.

Birthday Bonfire and Cobbler

For Callie's first birthday we spent a lovely few hours in Homestake, our favorite mountain spot not too far from our home.  We pulled out the camp chairs, spread out a big blanket, and just lounged and relaxed and watched our favorite little one-year-old explore her surroundings.

She's ONE!

Then we busted out the presents.  Grandpa and Grandma Elwood brought a whole box of presents (which we, as parents, added a few to) from them and Great Grandpa and Grandma Elwood and the Aunties from Logan.  Lots of presents to open and new toys to play with, but when you're one and there's dirt and sticks next to the blanket, it can be kind of a tough choice to make.

First present from the grandparents.

She loves turning the pages in books.

Fun new toy . . . but ooh this paper is kind of nice!

Gettin' the hang of the mallet.

Balls and a xylophone and a mallet -
what a great, cute toy from G & G E.

Bright, colorful puzzle with big knobs for gripping from
Auntie Heather (the Logan one).

Aggie game day shirt from the Aggie
Aunties Ky and Meg.

A new bucket hat (that she can't pull off because of that
cute little strap) from Mom and Dad - obviously not too
pleased about said strap at first (but she warmed up to it
pretty soon).

New hiking backpack carrier from
G & G B.

This was a duel daddy-daughter gift
and it is so great!

Not pictured here are a few more gifts for the birthday babe: a blue-striped-with-pink-trim-and-bow romper outfit (can be seen here) from Grandpa and Grandma Elwood, a set of foam blocks and a yellow-and-white-striped zip-up hoodie from Mom and Dad, a shape block bucket from Great Grandma and Grandpa Elwood, a Target gift card from the Farrers, and a darling summer outfit (green shirt with pink flowers and pink-and-white-striped capris topped off with baby-sized pink flip-flops) from the Wihongis (actually is pictured, just not right here - see last photo in this post), plus some cute cards from Great Grandma Gallagher and friend/honorary aunt Jessie.  What a loved little girl we have!

The day was lovely . . . have I already mentioned that?  When we stepped out of the car at our chosen site, the smell of the fir needles plus the dirt plus the sunshine (equals the best smell EVER) created mountain magic in our nostrils.  It was such a treat so spend the afternoon together in the mountains.

Maybe she loved the smell so much she needed to give it a taste?

Too bad it smells better than it tastes, baby girl.

A humorous attempt at a family photo with too many
cameras pointed our way.

After presents and playing, we gathered up a little firewood and roasted dogs and mallows for dinner.  We even got to put one of Gregg's birthday gifts to use: a hot dog slicer called The Cyclone.  And it really did make a mighty fine lookin' weiner once it was all roasted up.  Chips and coleslaw and water to drink rounded up the meal.  For dessert, instead of cake, we had Dutch oven peach cobbler.  (Only thing we forgot was the #1 candle for her to blow out - oops!)  Cal loved her first super sweet taste of the stuff (and who can blame her?).

{INSERT PHOTO OF COBBLER HERE}

It's crazy to think we've had Callie in our lives for a whole year . . . and yet we can barely remember life without her here.  Here's to many, many more summery birthday celebrations for our girl!

P.S. Here's the birthday girl, celebrating all week with a new outfit (the one from the Wihongis) to wear on Thursday!
