While Melia and Cohen were in town, Grandma and Grandpa wanted to have a zoo day with all the grandkids they could round up. Turns out they got 3/4s of their posse to come along for a day at Utah's Hogle Zoo on Saturday, August 24th. It was fun to see the animals and play with cousins and ride the carousel and train (maybe that's the whole point of the zoo, if you ask Cal and Sam!). My favorite? Drinking from the vintage lion drinking fountain - it's the original one from 1965, just given a makeover in recent years, and brought back fun memories of when I came here as a kid. Another highlight was the bird show, where we sat on the 2nd row and were right in the middle of the show (literally! Melia and Cohen both got called up to be bird handling/photographing volunteers). What a fun morning! (And then, afterward, some of us got to watch Kage in his last summer league basketball game of the season - wow! that was fun, too!)
Can she be any cuter? |

We got to watch the elephants eat their breakfast - romaine hearts stuffed into this fence, that they grabbed with their trunks and popped in their mouths. |
Another photo op, another photo. |
We loved watching the seals and sea lions swimming around in their pools. |
Bird show pro, Cohen. |
The show host guy asked him if he had ever tamed a falcon before, and when Cohen said no, he asked how he was so good at. Cohen's response: "Well, I've seen shows about it!" |
bonus video!
(I didn't think to turn on a video till it was
the last four seconds of his turn, but here
it is)
Carousel time! Sam chose a turkey and Cal was on a praying mantis! (What the?) |
There were art displays all over the zoo created from plastic that had been found in the ocean. Pretty creative and sobering, when you think about it. |
Train time! |
