OBX Blanchard Reunion {Day 7: Crabbing}

Day 7 (Saturday, July 27th) was our last full day together (and actually we didn't even have a full day with the Wihongis since they flew out Saturday evening and had to leave the house mid-afternoon).  We hung out at the house until it was time to mini golf.  Sam and Liz were especially invested in this outing, but man, it was HOT!  There was no breeze and we all baked while we played.  Sam and I ended up bailing early and found refuge in the AC coolness of the bathrooms, drinking long from the icy cold drinking fountain over and over until everyone else was done.

After lunch and naps and the Wihongis left, we decided to give the crabbing thing a try.  We took all the kids that were left, Grandpa and Grandma, a package of chicken thighs and some lengths of yarn over to the sound.  We tied the strings to the chicken legs and dropped them in the water.  And then we waited.  But we didn't have to wait too long.  Little blue crabs came crawling up to the chicken leg, grabbed on, and then we pulled them up and netted them.  Most were too small to keep, though they have a limit of like 50 per day per person if you get them big enough (at least 5" across), but Katie was thrilled to snag one that was just big enough to take back to the house and cook up for dinner.  The rest of us had delicious meatloaf made by Ryan and Lea.

We finished the day with another trip to the beach.  It was perfection.  The sun was setting behind the dune and the water was as warm as the air.  And all the other people and umbrellas and chairs were gone.  We splashed and played until bedtime!  It was the perfect end to our stay!

Milk mustache.

Taking a turn on the hammock swing on the porch.

Pirates ahoy at the mini golf!
(The worker at the desk was from Romania so
Gregg tried to chat with him for a bit.)

It's a crab!

She's got one!  Her total was 7 for the outing!

Sam ended up snagging two overall.

We worked our way down to the pier where we had our pictures
the first night - the crabbing was not great over there and by
then we were all hot and thirsty so we didn't last long on the steps.

Home again home again jiggety jog.

Walking back on the "nature trail" to the culdesac
where the house is.

More crepe myrtle that I love.  I was not expecting
to see blooming trees in July so it was very fun!

A peek at our porch.

Katie's catch.

Meatloaf for days (literally - we had
plenty for sandwiches for the road
the next day, which was wonderful!).

A snapshot of the info board on the life guard station we saw every
day on our way to the beach.

The last perfect ocean time - it was splendid!
