Happy 6th Birthday to Sam

Sam is six! We started the morning with presents and donuts and then finished opening presents. Then, since was rainy and cool, we hung out around the house till lunchtime playing and building with the new toys. Pat's take-out was the lunch of choice for the birthday boy. And then we ventured out to Ogden to check out the Touch-a-Truck event at the fairgrounds commemorating the 20th anniversary of September 11th. We made one more stop at Harrisville Park to play a round of disc golf with his new discs. We ate tacos for dinner back at home and finished off the day with lego cake and mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Lego ferrari kit. Says it's for 7+, but he built it
twice that day!

Hot Wheels Monster Truck!

Here's a fun series:

Our friends the Martins have a son named Kesler who
is a pro disc golfer and has his own signature disc. Shane, Kesler's dad,
who Gregg plays disc golf with sometimes, got Kesler to
stamp his signature disc stamp onto a couple of Sam-weight
discs to surprise him for his birthday!

All those presents before breakfast!
But a birthday boy has gotta eat. His request
was donuts from Valley Market, so Gregg ran
over to pick some out that morning and we all
enjoyed our sugar high for the rest of the day!

Chocolate cake donut with chocolate icing
and sprinkles!

Back to the lego kit building!

Oh yeah, a soccer ball of his own!

Hotwheels porche.

A big 'un.

Heart eyes! A multi-lane speed box for his
hotwheels to race on!

And last but not least a few handmade
things from Cal.

Awwww...

This was so clever and cute and creative:
a whole folder full of activity pages for Sam
to write and draw and fill out on our drive
to VT.

And a coupon book!

While the kids played with new toys, Gregg
helped me engineer and assemble the lego cake.

Ferrari done!

Climbing in the big SWAT truck at touch-a-truck.

Who just got her first ace (aka hole in one)?!
This mom!! I was so surprised and thrilled!

When we got home his last present had arrived in the mail
so I quickly wrapped it and he opened it right up: a couple of books
by Matt Christopher (a favorite author of Gregg's growing up).
(Funny side story here: Cal was telling me while we were playing disc golf
that she was surprised there weren't any book presents since they always get
books for their birthdays . . . I told her just to wait!)

Leaves are a-changin' in the neighborhood!

We had so much cake we made this smaller
version for tonight and saved the big one
for when we had grandparents the next evening.

Moody clouds to the west.

Another few holes at home after cake.

On Sunday, the 12th, we invited grandparents (and Mugs) to come over for dinner and cake. Sam chose Thai Peanut Noodles, orange jello, watermelon and cantaloupe (and I threw in broccoli for something green) for the menu. We enjoyed a lovely evening on the deck visiting and eating and opening presents. And we even snuck in a walk to the park to enjoy the perfect weather!

An Aggie shirt from Gma and Gpa Elwood!

And this just looks awesome: a Mars Rover
science project kit. Can't wait to dig into this
one (and count it as science! ;)

New shorts to go with the shirt.
And he got a book called Armstrong about
a mouse who flies to the moon.
(Gma and Gpa Blanchard gave him golf clubs, balls and
some hot wheels cars earlier in the week at his birthday date.)

What a guy!

What a night - testing out the new soccer ball
at the park's goals. It was pretty spectacular, actually.

And we can't forget the part where we list all the awesome things about Sam as a six-year-old:
  • is an awesome reader, but is not above "bribery" of reading a book before watching a hot wheels or lego youtube video afterward
  • favorite subject in school is math (he's working on first grade math and rockin' it!)
  • loves building things with legos and reading books about legos and watching videos about lego sets and builds and collections. He can follow the directions and make up his own creations, both.
  • set the goal of riding 15 miles on his bike and did it!
  • huge fan of Teddy and Jackson, his stuffed bears
  • falls asleep in less than 2 minutes most nights (and many car drives)
  • super sporty and coordinated - can and will play pretty much anything: soccer, baseball, football, basketball, biking, scootering, hiking, running, but his favorite is disc golf (and he's getting pretty dang good! he earned a new disc by getting a birdie on our of our backyard holes!)
  • has a bit of a lisp that we're trying not to worry about but help him practice saying those s's with his tongue behind his teeth instead of between
  • has memorized almost all the words to the first four articles of faith songs (which we sing each morning as part of school); also super loves Praise to the Man and picks it whenever he gets the choice
  • his handwriting is getting really good
  • is still an excellent sharer and loves to make sure he picks up something for Cal if she's ever not around and might want whatever it is he's collecting
  • favorite food is pot stickers/dumplings (thanks to an introduction to them last year at Vermont Country Deli)
  • he's funny and has the cutest little squinty eyed smile
  • is pretty good at keeping his room clean
  • is very motivated to complete our morning checklist routine (especially for the sweet treat at the end!)
  • checks out exclusively nonfiction books about cars, dirt bikes, dinos, legos, trains, etc. from the library (on his own card!), but will read (and will definitely listen to) a "story" when I need something a little more imaginative in the mix
We're sure grateful to have this super spectacular special six-year-old Sam in our family!
